When you are at the store grocery shopping, do you ever look at the ingredient list of the items you’re buying? If you have ever read over the labels on various health and hygiene products I’m sure you are aware that it can be a daunting task deciphering the long lists of ingredients you can’t even pronounce, let alone knowing where they come from or what they’re used for. Really, the best way to ensure that you’re using the best, healthiest products on your body is to simply make your own. It is certainly possible to make safe, effective toiletries at home, using simple, healthy ingredients. Creating your own personalized soap is a wonderful example. It’s pretty, smells good, and you know each ingredient that went into creating it! Certainly using a mild, homemade soap with pure ingredients triumphs over the harsh, synthetic “frankensoaps” which otherwise would be applied to your precious skin.

In reality, creating soap is not synonymous to the task of remodeling your bathroom. Really, it’s fairly simple. However, precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of you and everyone else in your home. Harsh chemicals are used when making soap, so you must be sure to wear protective gear and keep young children away from your soap making station. While making your own soap can be a little dangerous, if done properly, it can be very rewarding. Homemade soap is great to have in your own home, and can also provide wonderful gifts!

There are two different ways to create soap; a cold process and a hot process. In this article, we will focus on the cold process of soap making. Using the cold process to make soap, you use oils, lye, and water. These ingredients, combined at the right temperature, will harden into the soap you’ve been looking for. This process is called saponification.

So what you will need is:

  1. 24 ounces of coconut oil

  2. 38 ounces of vegetable shortening

  3. 24 ounces of olive oil

  4. 12 ounces of sodium hydroxide, or lye

  5. 32 ounces spring or distilled water

  6. 4 ounces of your favorite essential oil, such as peppermint, lemon, rose or lavender.

Heat all of the ingredients and mix them together. Pour your liquid creation into a mold of whatever shape and size you prefer and let them cool. Once cooled and solidified they’ll be ready for use! With just a touch of precaution and a pinch of effort, making your own soap can be a fun little project. However, for those busy folks or for the people who want to skip all the work and just reap the benefits of some marvelous homemade soap, you can find it at rosiscottagetreasures.com.
